    Staying in Pain may cost you Brain


    Patients who suffered from back pain for a year have lost 1.3 cubic centimetres of gray matter on average according to a study by North Western University of Chicago.

    The affected regions were the ones involved in emotional processing and behavioural control as well as relay of sensory information. The same team has previously showed that people with chronic back pain perform poorly in emotional decision-making tasks.

    Animal studies have shown previously that chronic pain can trigger long-term rearrangements in the neurons of the spinal nerves.

    Acupuncture is very effective for recovering stroke patients, who also suffer brain cell damage.
    I dare speculate that these findings explain why chronic back pain is so difficult to treat with conventional methods and why we can often achieve long term relief with acupuncture.

    Ketchup against cancer

    As you most likely know, tomato ketchup contains a chemical which has been shown to help protect against breast, prostate and pancreatic cancer.

    A new research discovered that organic varieties of tomato ketchup contain three times as much of this cancer-fighting chemical (lycopene) as non-organic brands.

    Most of the ketchups scored a 100, while fast food ones contained only 60, and organic ones toped containing up to 183 micrograms per gram of ketchup.

    The research was done in Albany (not the North Shore, but California US). Our NZ ketchups may be somewhat different...
